Become a Pony Club Member

We’re now a Pony Club Centre!

Being a member of the Pony Club isn’t just for those who own or loan a pony.  Anyone can take part  – all you need is a love of all things horsey and get ready to enjoy the fun!

There are plenty of activities to join in with and you can complete a range of Pony Club Tests and Achievement Badges.  It’s all about improving your riding, taking care of ponies, learning more about them and having fun with your friends.

We’ve been really looking forward to becoming a Pony Club Centre.  It’s a great way for us as a riding school to get more young people involved with horses and ponies, without them needing to own their own pony.  Pony Club Membership works out at £29 per year and with so many fun activities on offer, it’s well worth it!

earn badges

From Mini Achievement Badges for Horse Clothing, Beach Riding, Camping, Pony Behaviour, Points of the Pony and many more for younger riders, all the way through to Progressive Tests and Competition Badges for those who are a little more advanced, there are plenty of badges to work towards.

Our first Pony Club Training day will be on 1st June

Rent a Pony

As regulars at the yard, you will know that we are passionate about horses and riding and that our aim is to offer the best experience we can for our clients.  We are currently working hard on developing our facilities further and we hope to be able to give you more news on the plans we have for the future of Northington Stud and Stables shortly.  In light of this, we’ve had to make a few changes to our Pony Rental scheme.

We’ve worked on updating the terms and conditions of our Pony Rental scheme, introducing new fee arrangements which reflect the cost of different types of agreement more fairly as well as fair usage arrangements for our horses.  Our new rates will apply to new renters with immediate effect.  Those of you who have signed an existing agreement will be given a grace period of two months.  In any event, the new fees will be applicable from 1st May 2017.

In addition, we have been required to register for VAT and this means that we are now obliged to charge VAT on loan fees.  As you will know, where VAT is paid, it does not benefit us and all VAT fees go straight to HMRC.  VAT will be added to all fee invoices with immediate effect.

With regards to usage, we have made a few changes to rental arrangements and which days our horses may be used too.  There may well be some restrictions on weekend usage when our horses are more in demand.

As a gentle reminder on existing terms and conditions, we would ask that you adhere to these consistently.  This refers to stable management tasks in particular.  It is unfair both to other clients and to yard staff to have to see to these tasks if they are left undone.  We are pleased to say that the majority of our clients are brilliant at getting these jobs done but we would ask that ALL clients ensure that horses and equipment are left in the condition we would all wish to find them in, without fail.

Lastly we want to thank you all for your support and tell you that we really value all our clients and look forward to our continuing relationship with you.  We hope you agree that these new changes will ensure that our Pony Rental represents fairness and consistency for all.

Those of you wishing to discuss arrangements further or talk to Fran about renting a pony, please email NORTHINGTONSTUDANDSTABLES@GMAIL.COM or call on 07970 717093.

There are many gorgeous faces still looking for a lovely rider to rent them.  Why not check our Our  Ponies page to find your pony?

I’m 12h grey and 14yrs old. I’m a super Pony club pony with cheeky temperament. I jump well and am a good lead-rein or second pony as can be strong. AVAILABLE TO RENT

Pink pink pink

thank you

Our Pink Pony day was a huge success.  We’ve never seen so much pink in the yard!!!  In fact we’re still washing it off some of the ponies!

Thank you to all who came down to The Woolpack in Totford to support us.  Northington Stud and Stables even featured in both The Daily Echo and Hampshire Chronicle.

Tommy and Lucy are thrilled to have been able to raise such a significant amount in memory of their mum, Sue.  We are incredibly grateful and bowled over by your generosity – so far funds of over £1300 have been raised and will be presented to Breast  Cancer Haven next month.

Thanks to the following big donors – we couldn’t have done it without you.  You made sure that plenty of ponies in the yard were adorned with plenty of glitter and paint for such a good cause.

Freddie was a good sport! Doesn’t he make the perfect model?!!

We are delighted to tell you that we will be running PINK PONY DAY on Monday 22nd August from 10am – 1pm at The Woolpack Inn, Totford Bring everyone you know!  We’ll be doing pony rides (£2), painting handprints on ponies (from £1) and there’ll be cakes for sale too.  We’d love to see plenty of friendly faces so please spread the word!

All proceeds will go towards the wonderful work of The Haven.  Click PINK PONY DAY for more info.

So far we have received pledges of over £350 for painting ponies PINK!  Freddie was our first model.  For every £50 we receive we’ll paint another pony in the yard PINK.

However, there are plenty more ponies to paint and we’re determined to get as many ponies painted up as we can.

So if you’d like to donate to see your favourite pony in the yard painted PINK then let Fran know, send us an email at or turn up at The Woolpack on Monday 22nd August between 10am and 1pm.

Our first Pony Camp of the summer proved to be a huge success.  Plenty of laughs, learning and riding!  Don’t believe us?  Just take a look at the pictures!

Lucy and Rufus’ Stable Life

LucyblogHello again!  This month I am going to tell you all about my day at Sparsholt Horse show. I was a groom for Fran who was riding May and Harriet who was on Sid. It’s hard work being a groom because you do quite a lot of going backwards and forwards getting things, but it is fun.
To get ready for a show, first you have groom the horse.  I had to take the travel boots and tail bandage off and put them safely out of the way, brush the tail through and go over their body with a body brush. Then I tacked up the horses whilst the rider got changed.  Once the riders and horses were ready, then it was time to go down to the ring to watch, making sure to take the grooming bag down too.
Considering it was May and Sid’s first show, they were brilliant!  We came home with lots of rosettes- mostly firsts and seconds.  May even came home with Reserve Champion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those of you who might not know, each show has a championship and at the end, there is a Champion and Reserve Champion.  The reserve is the second best horse and rider so Fran and May did REALLY well.
Thanks for reading!

Northington Stud and Stables Newsletter – May 2016

Well May got off to a rather busy start with the launch of our new website Since then we’ve been up to all sorts with our half term Pony day another roaring success too.

Out and About

We’ll be out and about in June at various events so do come and say hello.  We’re at the Avington Fete on 26th June and one of our gift vouchers for both a child and adult lesson will be auctioned off as part of Micheldever Fete’s silent auction on 17th June.  Make sure you enter if you’re local to Micheldever!  You may have seen us on The Grange Estate’s website too.

We currently have 2 full liveries available.  Please let Fran know if you might be interested or think you might know anyone who is.  All details about livery costs can be found on our Livery page.

Pony of the month

We’re going to be sharing some of our ponies in a new Pony of the Month slot each newsletter.

This month is Jess’ turn.  She’s a gorgeous girl who is looking for someone to rent her.  Jess is a 14hh bay mare, 7 yrs old and has a kind temperament. Although she’s not suitable for beginners, she would make a cracking pony for a competent child.

If you’re looking to rent a pony, don’t forget to take a look at Our Ponies page to see which ponies are available to rent.

Two of our lovely ponies are looking for a new permanent home, Blueberry and Ebony May.

Blueberry isn’t rideable but could be a project for someone who has the time to give her.  She has been to shows, led by hand, and placed in the first six so she has plenty of potential.  She is good with children and a doddle to lead and handle.  She’d make a great companion pony too.
EbonEbonyy May is a beautifully bred Dartmoor 11.2hh black mare.  She is 9 yrs broken and needs a competent rider to take her to shows and have fun with her.  In truth, Ebony is rather too good for the riding school environment and needs an owner who can maximise her potential.  Bred by Queenie Padwick, Ebony is looking for a 5* home.
All enquiries regarding Blueberry and Ebony should be addressed to  Fran.

Scotty is back from pony bootcamp and going well.  It’s lovely to have him back at the yard and we look forward to seeing him go from strength to strength.

Get the kit

You may well have seen our Northington Stud and Stables branded clothing.  We have a range of items for sale regularly so do ask Fran if you’d like to take a look in the office or purchase.

Pink Ponies

HavenWe’re going to be running a PINK DAY fundraiser at Northington Stud and Stables in aid of The Haven which offers care and support to those with and affected by breast cancer.  Lucy is determined to paint all our ponies PINK but we need your help.  So we’re thinking that for every £75 raised, we’ll paint one of our ponies pink, from head to foot.  We’re keen to get you involved too, taking pictures of the yard all decked out in pink, pink ponies, pink riders – the lot – and sharing on social media.  There’ll be plenty of glitter involved too.  The more money we raise, the more ponies we can paint pink for the day!  Please let Fran know if you’d like to get involved.  We’ll be sharing the date for our PINK DAY shortly.

Introducing Lucy and Rufus’ Stable Life

Hi!  My name is Lucy.  You might well have seen me at Northington Stud and Stables.  Francesca (riding instructor and owner of the yard) is my mum so I’m there quite often!

I have a pony called Rufus who I keep at the yard.  He is super sweet and even though he is mine, people still ride him because I don’t mind.

Rufus is 12.hh so quite small but some big people have ridden him.  He used to be a livery owned by a very tall girl called Ruby but she got too big for him and so he was passed on to me.

I love spending time with the stable girls, practising for shows in spring and summer, learning to ride side-saddle, jumping, and lots, lots more!  Fran is AMAZING – she helps me with all my riding.  She sometimes even pays me for helping out!

Pony gossip, showing you how to pick out hooves or groom your pony, plaiting, more about how to look after your pony and telling what I’ve been up to with Rufus, I’ll be sharing lots of things that we do at the yard on here so stay tuned!
